Tackling Rogue Landlords

Liverpool Labour is bringing in a licensing scheme for private rented properties – in a bid to bash dodgy landlords.

All landlords who rent private properties in Tuebrook & Stoneycroft would need a licence. Licenced landlords will have to properly manage their properties, taking care of gas safety and stay on top of repairs. Crucially, landlords will have to sort out any anti-social behaviour by tenants.

Carol Sung said “We all know someone in with a horror story to tell about a bad landlord. This scheme is about giving tenants some expectation of their rights, and the Council the power to tackle dodgy landlords.

“Tuebrook and Stoneycroft has a growing number of privately rented properties so it is important that what is on offer locally is of high quality.

“Although many landlords are fine, I am concerned about dodgy landlords. This scheme will help make sure that properties come up to scratch.”

The scheme will be introduced in April.

Carol recently had a letter published in the Liverpool Echo on the introduction of the scheme:

I welcome the news that the City Council is bringing in a new licensing scheme for private landlords. We all know someone with a horror story about a bad landlord - at last, tenants will have some proper rights. The Council will have powers to tackle rogue landlords – four have just been charged with allowing rats to take over empty houses.

Both Tuebrook and Stoneycroft have a growing number of privately rented properties so it is important that what is on offer locally is of high quality. Although many are fine, I am concerned about dodgy landlords. This will help make sure that properties come up to scratch and any anti-social behaviour by tenants can be nipped in the bud.
